The outcome of this November’s election could hit government employees in the pocketbook. That’s why it’s more important than ever that we Stand Up and vote this November.
Look at the evidence: For three of the past four years, Congress denied us a cost-of-living increase. This year, we received a whopping 1 percent across-the-board raise – and we’re likely to see the same paltry increase next year as well.
If that’s going to change, we need to elect lawmakers who believe in the value of government employees and will fight for us, not against us.
A small group of lawmakers in the House and Senate went to bat for us this year, proposing a 3.3 percent pay raise in 2015 that would go a long way toward helping employees make up some of the ground we have lost. This effort ultimately failed because they lacked the support of enough colleagues to make the proposal law.
The lesson from this is clear: without more likeminded lawmakers in the halls of Congress, nothing will change.
In deciding which political candidates to endorse this year, AFGE has chosen women and men who will fight on behalf of public servants to protect our hard-earned pay, benefits, and jobs. The candidates AFGE has endorsed understand that a strong civil service means a strong economy and an even stronger country.
It’s up to you to Stand Up and make your voices be heard this November. So register to vote, volunteer, and be a part of the solution.
