Trump Tragedies features American workers whose lives were destroyed by Trump and his extremist policies. Testimonies submitted to AFGE are edited for clarity and length.
I have been with USAID for about 15 years, but my journey with the agency began long before that. As an Afghan refugee in the camps of Pakistan, I fought hard to join the organization that gave me hope. I still remember the USAID logo on the boxes of food and essential supplies my family received. Even though I barely understood English at the time, that logo was imprinted in my memory. It stood for something bigger than just aid—it meant hope, survival, and another night without hunger.
When I reached adulthood, I knew exactly what I wanted to do: give back to the American people. They had lifted my family out of poverty, and working at USAID was more than just a career—it was a mission of love, a way to serve those who were less fortunate, weary, and in need. What makes America great is its generosity. I have seen firsthand that bombs and drones do not win hearts and minds—compassion and selflessness do. The American people have always stepped up to help others, and that is the true source of their influence in the world.
With the administration’s decision to dismantle USAID, I have lost not only my career and livelihood but also my ability to care for my aging, ailing mother. But the greater loss is America’s: the power to make a difference, to lead with kindness, and to change lives for the better.
