Thousands of federal employees in 13 metropolitan areas should begin to receive salaries based on labor market conditions in their own cities starting January. This expansion of localities is the culmination of years of efforts by AFGE and the Federal Salary Council to make federal salaries more sensitive to local market criteria.

AFGE Local 63 in California recently met with Daniel Hazard, field director for Rep. Susan Davis, to discuss pressing issues that hurt Defense Commissary Agency employees and military families. The local reported that Director Hazard was receptive to the local’s concern about the merger of the DeCA and AAFES and the increase in employee contribution from 0.8% to 6.35% to the retirement system.

In a written testimony submitted to the Senate Committee on Veterans Affairs during a hearing this week on pending legislation, AFGE raised serious concerns over a bill that would require employees of all levels who received bonuses in 2011 through 2014 to repay the awards if the employees “contributed to the purposeful omission of the name of one or more veterans waiting for health care from an electronic wait list for a medical facility.”
