The AFGE Law Enforcement Steering Committee is proud to announce Bureau of Prisons Correctional Officer Jonathan Zumkehr as a recipient of the 2021 Law Enforcement Officer of the Year Award.
As President of AFGE Local 4070, Jonathan Zumkehr has worked diligently to protect the safety of and secure increased pay incentives for employees of United States Penitentiary, Thomson. Zumkehr worked to protect workers from COVID-19. He led the charge against the transfer of inmates without first testing them for COVID-19, a practice that has since been outlawed due to his efforts. Zumkehr has also been instrumental in fighting to bring more staff to USP Thomson by advocating for direct-hire authority, retention bonuses and increased locality pay. His efforts have led to recruitment and retention bonuses for staff and laid the groundwork for a fully staffed facility. AFGE Law Enforcement Steering Committee wanted to recognize the steadfast advocacy of Local 4070 President Zumkehr by selecting him as AFGE 2021 Officer of the Year.
We plan to present President Zumkehr with the Law Enforcement Officer of the Year award at the Legislative Conference on Tuesday evening. If you are attending, feel free to join us in congratulating Jon!
