History of AFGE Local
Due to Pacific Medical Centers originally being a U.S. Marine Hospital in 1855 and then a U.S. Public Health Hospital in 1951 who served Veterans, Merchant Seamen, etc. Once we had turned into Pacific Hospital PDA in 1981, our previous military hospital service allowed us the opportunity to be grandfathered into the American Federation of Government Employees (AFGE) from which then we established our AFGE Local 1170.
Established in 1982- 40+ years running
Original and only Union for Pacific Medical Centers (Pacmed)
Who We Are
AFGE stands for the American Federation of Government Employees. While we are not currently government employees, our connection to AFGE comes from a rich history.
PacMed was originally a U.S. Marine Hospital (1855) and later a U.S. Public Health Hospital (1951). When it transitioned to Pacific Hospital PDA in 1981, our federal service legacy allowed us to be grandfathered into AFGE, forming Local 1170.
What We Do
- Advocate for employee rights and fair treatment - Negotiate and enforce the Union Contract (CBA)
- Support employees during grievances or investigations - Ensure safe, equitable working condition
Why Membership Matters
As a paid member, you have a direct voice in union decisions—voting on contracts, electing leadership, and shaping your workplace rights.
Non-members are still covered by the contract but do not have voting rights or input in union matters.
Do You Know You Have The Right To Have Union Representation?
Weingarten rights allow employees to have Union representation during any interview or meeting with management that the employee reasonably believes could lead to discipline or discharge from employment.
