You can prepare and file your federal and state income tax returns for free! It’s a members-only benefit for AFGE members with a household income of $73,000 or less. Prepare + Prosper will help you get ready and provide you with the resources you need to file confidently for free. This benefit is part of an initiative to expand free tax filing. Thanks to the IRS Stakeholder Partnerships, Education & Communication (SPEC) program.
We are offering this valuable benefit to income-eligible AFGE members as another easy way to save money. You no longer need to purchase tax software, pay to electronically file, or use a for-profit tax preparation business.
AFGE members have free access to TaxSlayer tax preparation software. The software includes federal and state tax returns with schedules. It is fast, easy, and accurate with built-in assistance to answer your questions. It is cloud-based so there is no software to download, and you can access it from your smartphone, tablet, or desktop.
When you are done filling out your tax forms, TaxSlayer will electronically file your federal and state returns with no filing charges. You will be notified when the IRS and state revenue offices have received and accepted your return.
If you need assistance with your tax return, AFGE members can get expert help from IRS-certified volunteers at Prepare + Prosper. This Minnesota-based non-profit has been providing financial assistance and tax preparation for 50 years and is our trusted partner in this new member-only benefit. Volunteers can assist with all Federal returns, but for state returns, only Minnesota state tax law questions can be addressed. However, members will be referred to the appropriate state tax law entity for all other states.
The deadline to file your taxes is April 18, 2022.
