WASHINGTON – American Federation of Government Employees National Secretary-Treasurer Everett Kelley issued the following statement:
“Thank you to all the House of Representatives members who voted today to restore key provisions of the 1965 Voting Rights Act that were wrongly invalidated by the U.S. Supreme Court in 2013. These provisions are critical to prevent state and local governments from passing laws discriminating against voters due to their race, ethnicity, or similar factors. The fundamental right of all citizens to vote and participate in the elections process is key to our functioning democracy – one that public servants defend and advance every day through their work protecting our environment, caring for veterans, and safeguarding our country. Thank you to Rep. Terri Sewell of Alabama for introducing this important legislation and to House Speaker Nancy Pelosi of California for bringing it to a vote. I urge the Senate to pass S. 561, the Senate companion bill, at once.”
