WASHINGTON – American Federation of Government Employees National President J. David Cox Sr. today issued the following statement regarding Public Service Recognition Week:
“Every day, millions of women and men across the country and around the world serve our nation with honor and distinction as government employees. They work not for fame, glory or financial reward, but because they know the programs and services they deliver mean a better life for you and me.
“Without government workers, we would have classrooms full of students but no teachers; a military without weapons, vehicles, training or paychecks; dilapidated roads, highways, coastlines and airways; polluted rivers, toxic air, contaminated water and pesticide-laden food; empty mailboxes and dramatically higher shipping costs for businesses and consumers.
“Government employees often are the first ones blamed for all of life’s problems, yet we fail to honor them for all they do for the country. They touch our lives each and every day, so it’s only fitting that we set aside this first week of May to honor their service during Public Service Recognition Week.
“This week, I encourage everyone to say a special ‘thank you’ to the postal carrier delivering your mail, the TSA officer ensuring your plane is safe for flight, the Social Security representative processing your retirement application, the VA nurse caring for your family member, the soldier protecting us overseas and the law enforcement officer protecting us at home.
“They are all government workers, and they are proud to work for you.”
