(MUSKOGEE, Okla.)—American Federation of Government Employees (AFGE) National President J. David Cox Sr. issued the following statement in response to the election regarding AFGE representation at the Veterans Affairs Regional Office (VARO) in Muskogee, Okla.:
“On behalf of all of us here at AFGE, I would like to thank all of the employees who voted in this election. Over the past year we have reconnected with activists on the ground that have shown support for AFGE and the need for union representation at the worksite. It has been our privilege to educate employees at this location about the AFGE family and the value of labor unions.
“While we didn’t get the votes we needed to become the exclusive representative at this VARO we want employees to know that we will continue to show support for their desire to organize. Currently the Muskogee VARO is the only office in the country without union representation and over time I’m sure this will change. We are seeing a changing tide in this country where civil servants are fighting back against furloughs, pay freezes, and other attacks on their pay and benefits. It is clear that union membership provides the strongest voice in combating these attacks.”
