WASHINGTON – American Federation of Government Employees National President J. David Cox Sr. released the following statement:
“Government programs and services that benefit millions of Americans every day remain in a state of limbo for every day that goes by without Congress approving a federal budget.
“While a one-week funding extension certainly is preferable to a government shutdown, Congress and the White House must agree on a full-year budget as soon as possible. Federal employees need to know that they can count on getting their next paycheck and that their agencies will receive the resources and support they need to continue serving the American public.
“This type of budget uncertainty is disruptive to the workforce and to all Americans who depend on the government being open for business – to families who are planning vacations to national parks this summer, to service members who are applying for veterans benefits, to cancer sufferers whose lives depend on getting accepted into NIH clinical trials.
“Even the mere prospect of a government shutdown is damaging to the country. Congress must act as soon as possible to pass a budget and keep the people’s government open for business.”
