WASHINGTON – American Federation of Government Employees (AFGE) National President Everett Kelley and National Vice President for Women and Fair Practices Jeremy Lannan issued the following statement in response to the U.S. House of Representatives passage of the Equality Act (H.R. 5):
“All people deserve to be treated with dignity and respect, regardless of who they are, how they look, or who they love.
“AFGE commends the House of Representatives for their historic passage of the Equality Act, which ensures anti-discrimination protections to lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (LGBTQ+) people in areas of employment, housing, credit and other federally funded programs essential for achieving success.
“We call on the Senate to swiftly pass this long-overdue legislation. For far too long LGBTQ+ people have been denied basic civil rights, and this ban on discrimination toward members of this community is a major step towards ensuring true equality for all people.”
