WASHINGTON – Today, Everett Kelley, the president of the American Federation of Government Employees, AFL-CIO (AFGE), the largest union representing 700,000 federal and D.C. government employees, released the following statement:
“Now more than ever, particularly in light of this week’s attack on the U.S. Capitol by pro-Trump, anti-democracy rioters, we must commit as a nation to a peaceful transition of power.
“That transition must leave political games aside, uphold merit principles, and preserve the democratic institution of an apolitical civil service. Americans can’t afford to have unqualified political cronies instead of the nation’s top experts leading efforts to distribute desperately needed coronavirus vaccines and carry out the priorities of the Biden administration.
“For the current administration, whose moral authority is nonexistent, to try to extend its policymaking influence beyond the president’s term through this naked power grab would be an affront to the will of the American people.
“Any efforts underway to ‘burrow’ political appointees into the apolitical civil service must end today.”
