Largest Federal Workers Union Responds to New Wave of Laws Restricting Freedom to Vote
WASHINGTON – American Federation of Government Employees National President Everett Kelley released the following statement:
“Today, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis signed into law unfair new restrictions on our freedom to vote, following a dangerous pattern we are seeing across the nation.
“For our democracy to function, we must all be free to make our voices heard through our vote. Unfortunately, certain politicians are taking away that freedom in order to cement their own power. The assault on our democracy began long before this newest bout, but new fronts have been opened up by the attacks of anti-democracy politicians on our freedoms in Georgia, now Florida, and with more unfair restrictions winding their way through several other state legislatures across the country.
“As citizens, we must reject all efforts to spread lies and misinformation about our electoral system, to divide our country, and to silence the voices of working Americans, especially minority, young, and new Americans, in order that a handful of politicians may secure their own power and rule only for the benefit of the rich.
“Likewise, we must work together to restore dignity to our politics. Taking away American freedoms in an ‘exclusive’ morning television celebration, as Gov. DeSantis did today, is a grotesque spectacle fit for Vladimir Putin’s Russia, but it falls well below even the haggard standards of our contemporary politics.”
