Lawmakers File Legal Brief Supporting AFGE v. Trump Lawsuit

AFGE welcomes lawmakers’ brief opposing Trump’s anti-worker executive orders

WASHINGTON – A bipartisan group of current and former lawmakers today filed an amicus brief in support of lawsuits filed by the American Federation of Government Employees and other federal unions challenging President Trump’s anti-worker executive orders.

“We are profoundly gratified that so many elected leaders from both political parties are speaking up in support of federal employees and their rights under the law,” AFGE National President J. David Cox Sr. said.

Reps. Elijah Cummings of Maryland and Peter King of New York joined former Reps. William “Bill” Clay Sr. of Missouri and Jim Leach of Iowa in filing the amicus brief July 2.

“The three executive orders President Trump issued May 25 are a direct assault on the Constitutional rights of federal workers and a challenge to the democratic principles on which this nation was founded,” Cox said. “Many thanks to current Representatives Cummings and King and to former Representatives Clay and Leach for filing a legal brief opposing these illegal and unconstitutional directives.”

The legal filing by the current and former lawmakers follows separate letters sent to the White House by a bipartisan group of 44 House members and 45 Senate Democrats urging President Trump to rescind the executive orders.
