Trump’s Order Politicizing Federal Jobs Is Disservice to All Americans, AFGE Says
New executive order moves thousands of non-partisan federal workers to politicized hiring authority
WASHINGTON – The American Federation of Government Employees National President Everett Kelley issued the following statement in response to a new executive order signed today by President Trump that identifies thousands of positions to be converted to the new Schedule Policy/Career hiring authority:
“As I said last year when President Trump issued his first order creating this new politicized personnel system, this is a blatant attempt to corrupt the federal government by eliminating employees’ due process rights so they can be fired for political reasons.
“Thousands of employees who were hired under the nonpartisan, professional civil service will be converted to a new hiring schedule where they can be fired ‘at will’ by political appointees or other overseers with essentially no procedural or appeal safeguards that have long protected the integrity of government operations.
“The practical implications of this action are clear. Workers who once felt comfortable reporting waste, fraud, abuse, and mismanagement at their place of employment because they were protected from retaliation will now be afraid for their jobs if they speak out. That is a disservice to them and to the millions of Americans who rely on the federal government every day.
“AFGE will continue advocating for our members and fighting this administration’s anti-worker policies in the courts, in Congress, and at the ballot box.”
