(NORFOLK, VA)—With approximately 10,000 TSA members in 25 Locals nationwide, the American Federation of Government Employees added to its reputation as the union for TSA workers with a new Local in Norfolk, Va. Approximately 70 Transportation Security Officers at Norfolk International Airport—35 percent of the airport’s TSO workforce—already have joined Local 448. which officially will be chartered on Wednesday, March 25.
“AFGE has stood behind TSOs for seven years, but this new Local means that TSOs will have a voice at home,” said AFGE District Four National Vice President Joseph Flynn. “The new Local signifies a growing trend among TSOs that they want local representation, while belonging to the largest—and among the most influential—federal employee union in the nation. AFGE is the only union that can offer that, and will continue its drive to have Locals in every major city in the U.S.”
In stark contrast to other employees at the Department of Homeland Security, and most other federal employees, TSOs are denied the basic workplace rights they so rightly deserve. AFGE repeatedly has, and continues to urge Congress to support efforts by President Obama to rescind the directive denying TSOs their rights by granting TSOs collective bargaining rights and workplace protections.
AFGE Local 448 falls under the union’s Fourth District, which covers Maryland, North Carolina, Virginia and West Virginia.
