AFGE locals representing 250,000 Department of Defense workers across the country are mounting an aggressive campaign in response to Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth’s illegal action to terminate most of our collective bargaining agreements.
The message they are sending to workers is loud and clear: AFGE isn’t going anywhere.
AFGE’s representation of our members has never relied solely on union contracts. We fight for members in the halls of Congress and in the courts, we represent employees facing discrimination or retaliation at the workplace, and we advocate for workers in the press and through grassroots community outreach.
Secretary Hegseth’s move to terminate our legally negotiated contracts comes a year after President Trump signed Executive Order 14251, which illegally stripped over one million federal employees of their union rights in retaliation against AFGE for its member advocacy.
It’s clear why the administration is targeting our union: we have filed more than dozen lawsuits challenging the administration’s attempts to fire mass numbers of federal workers, downsize or outright eliminate critical agencies and programs, and replace non-partisan civil service workers with contractors or employees who pledge loyalty to the president.
It’s a clear case of unlawful retaliation against AFGE – and it’s an egregious attack on the tens of thousands of military veterans who have continued to serve their country as civilian DoD employees.
While AFGE National continues to challenge Executive Order 14251 and explores ways to challenge to the termination of our DoD contracts, AFGE locals are encouraged to make their presence known at worksites so employees understand that they still have a union. This can include handing out flyers, reaching out to workers through phone banks and text campaigns, and holding townhalls or other offsite gatherings for current and prospective members.
AFGE also locals should continue to check www.afge.org/dodstrong for guidance and forward any agency communications regarding potential contract terminations to AFGE’s General Counsel Office at [email protected].
