As the summer comes to a close, autumn sets in and people begin getting ready for the holidays, it is typical to see our growth begin to slow. That is not happening this year.
Our union ended October with a net gain of 1,826 members, above our monthly goal of 1,500. We also saw growth in every single AFGE district with District 10 taking the lead.
AFGE continued to grow because the recruitment isn’t strictly event based that takes place only when people have time and slows down when people are busy. Our growth comes from continuous organizing and building organizing capacity in locals.
“Once the infrastructure exists, the organizing continues,” said AFGE Membership and Organization Director Dave Cann. “We have seen growth in every district this year, and [districts] 4, 8, 9 and 10 have grown every month in the past year.”
Cann explained that when bargaining unit employees are aware of the role of the union in their workplace and their opportunity to have a voice on the job, all conversations regarding improvement in the workplace not only lead to joining the effort, but also to expanding it.
“When we are addressing issues we care about and actively working to make improvements, we understand the benefit and need to get more folks involved, and so we grow, and the growth means more power and material improvements on the job,” he added. “It is a cycle – a positive cycle of growth.”
