Do you know what to do if there’s an active shooter in your building? How would you handle performance standards that focus on speed rather than quality of service? What if you suspect your water system is contaminated?
Good questions! And we have the answers!
The AFGE National Veterans Affairs Council is holding its annual health and safety conference next month to guide you through all the health and safety-related scenarios. AFGE members from other government agencies are welcome to attend.
The conference will be held on April 22-26, 2024, in San Antonio, Texas. VA Assistant Secretary for Human Resources and Administration / Operations, Security and Preparedness Cassandra Law will be the opening speaker.
Like previous conferences, this event is chockfull of great classes that will help you up your health and safety game at work and save lives.
Some of the highlights of the classes:
- Whistleblower Protection: It’s everyone’s responsibility to report unsafe conditions in the workplace.
- Active Shooter: Although rare, active shooter incidents have been increasing over the last twenty years. Preparedness and training are key to prevention of incidents and limiting loss of life and injury when they occur. All employees need to know what actions to take when confronted with an active shooter and how to assist responding law enforcement officials.
- Workplace Stress: Workplace stress has been associated with anxiety, depression, and even heart disease. It impacts workers on the job and impacts their home lives as well. Performance standards that focus on speed of service delivery rather than quality of service may cause a moral dilemma for effected workers.
- Accident Investigation: When an accident occurs it is important to investigate the root cause of incident. This typically includes observing the time, place, and environment to assess causative factors.
- OSHA General Industry 10-Hour Certification Class: In this course participants will learn rights, employer responsibilities, and how to file a complaint as well as how to identify, abate, avoid, and prevent job related hazards.
- Safe Patient Handling and Mobility: We’ve Got Your Back! – Many job tasks involve manual materials handling: lifting, lowering, carrying, pushing, pulling, holding or restraining. When the work exceeds a worker's physical capabilities, however, serious injuries can result. In this workshop, participants will learn how to conduct an ergonomic job hazard analysis of manual material handling (MMH) tasks to prevent injuries at the workplace.
