We did it again!
In September, 3,452 federal workers joined the AFGE family, beating organizing records in all previous months this year with the lone exception of the outstanding month of August!
“Our growth is solid, the foundation of that growth is really meaningful, and shows a story of organizational commitment and change,” said AFGE Membership and Organization Department Director David Cann.
Most AFGE districts saw growth in September with District 10 having the highest net growth – 220.
The local with the highest number of new members in September was Local 1260 – again! For two months in a row, Local 1260 representing Transportation Security Officers (TSOs) in Southern California got the highest number of new members in the federation.
Like we previously said, for any TSA local to get any net gain in membership at all is already a success. TSA has high attrition rates especially among part-time TSOs due to low pay and a lack of Title 5 workplace protections. But Local 1260 had 108 new members – way above the number of drops of 37.
Local President Bobby Orozco Jr. was excited to learn they were up top again for the second consecutive month.
“We are once again honored to be recognized for the work of Local 1260,” said Orozco. “As we mentioned last month, we would continue doing what was working, and so far, our strategy seems to be working.”
“Our commitment to the membership and potential members is our sole focus—in addition to retaining our current members—and we are in the process of restructuring our recruiting efforts in order to maintain a strong Local for our Council, District, and National offices,” he added.
