The Office of Personnel Management (OPM) announced this week that notifications will begin to go out to the 21.5 million individuals affected by the data breach involving the federal government’s background investigation records beginning in September.
Naval Sea Systems Command, working with OPM and the General Services Administration, is in the process of hiring a contractor to notify hack victims and provide them with identity theft monitoring services. NAVSEA is expected to award the contract at the end of this month.
The 21.5 million individuals are victims of the second data breach that took place sometime last year. According to OPM, 19.7 million records belonged to those who had undergone background investigations. The other 1.8 million mostly belonged to applicants’ families.
