- AFGE History Timeline: Have you ever wondered how AFGE came to be? Or, what were the impending forces that led to the growth of American Unions? Take a look at this historical timeline and the many faces that have led to its role in American History.
- AFGE Leader’s Guide to New Employee Orientation: An important role for AFGE leaders is to introduce new employees to our union so that they understand what the union is, what it does, and why it’s in their interest to join. We know from experience that workers form their opinions about the union within the first few days on the job. So, how do we maximize the opportunity to welcome new employees and to build a stronger, more powerful AFGE?
- Collective Bargaining Essentials: This introductory course is designed to explain your legal right to bargain collectively under 5 U.S.C. Chapter 71, and the impact bargaining can make on workers’ day-to-day work life.
- Communicating to Build Union Power: AFGE Communications Director Andrew Huddleston discusses the importance of communication in today’s labor movement landscape, including framing vs. agenda setting, media literacy, communications resources available from AFGE. Case studies in communicating to build union power are discussed.
- E-Dues (self-paced): This course describes what E-Dues is, the need for E-Dues, and the process for getting your local set up to use E-Dues.
- Fiduciary Officers (self-paced): Designed to provide Local officers with essential knowledge needed to competently perform the duties and responsibilities required by law as a financially responsible party. Essentials training is designed to familiarize new officers with the fiduciary duties and legal requirements associated with their position.
- Financial Strategies: This course provides Local officers with essential knowledge needed to perform the duties and responsibilities of running a local as required by law. This course will highlight key components such as reporting requirements and maintaining financial records.
- Health and Safety Essentials: Through a series of True or False questions, this module provides an overview of the health and safety rights and responsibilities of federal employees. AFGE developed this module to ensure that members are familiar with the regulations that protect their health and safety on the job so they can better advocate for them.
- How to File an OSHA Complaint: This short video overviews how to file an OSHA complaint as a federal employee and goes over the sections of the complaint form.
- Local Officers Essentials: If you are a new officer, or interested in becoming one, then this course will give you a basic overview of the roles and responsibilities that will be required of you. To become a local officer, you must be elected by the local membership.
- NOW One-on-One Conversations: The aim of the NOW One-on-One Conversations training is to provide guidance on how to use the most impactful tool in organizing: the One-on-One Conversation. This training begins by explaining the meaning of NOW (Network of Organized Workers) as AFGE’s strategy for growing membership, what one-on-one conversations are, and how to have effective one-on-one conversations.
- PPE – Safety Essentials: This training resource provides you with information to determine when, how, and why it is important to use Personal Protective Equipment or PPE.
- Principles of Training Development for Unionists: What are training objectives? Why do we need training objectives? Every trainer should be able to respond readily to such questions. Training objectives provide the foundation for any training development or plans. A good objective will provide you with the purpose of training and instill motivation in participants. In this self-paced instruction module, you will have the opportunity to learn about learning domains and how to write an objective.
- Stewards Essentials: Stewards are involved in a wide variety of labor-management relations matters, member recruitment, and the promotion of AFGE’s NOW organizing strategic plan to build a large, powerful, effective union for workers in government service. AFGE is committed to ensuring that Stewards have the knowledge and resources they need to serve their colleagues. These self-paced training courses provides a first look at the responsibilities of a Steward.
- The Hatch Act: In this course, you will learn how to express your political viewpoints and participate in political activities without violating the law.
- Union 101: The purpose of this micro-learning module is to educate new AFGE members about our union, its history, and the role AFGE plays in the broader labor movement.
- Workers’ Compensation Introduction: This module overviews the basics of Workers’ Compensation for federal employees, including types of benefits, conditions of coverage, and timelines.
