(WASHINGTON) – The American Federation of Government Employees (AFGE) today congratulated Rep. Hilda Solis (D-CA) on her nomination to become the nation’s 25th Secretary of Labor. AFGE, the nation’s largest federal employee union, believes Rep. Solis is a strong advocate of labor and understands workers are vital to the nation’s communities and economy.
“President-elect Obama’s selection of Rep. Solis to head the Labor Department shows he understands Americans cannot have a strong economy without a strong workforce,” AFGE National President John Gage said, “Rep. Solis is a product of the labor movement and an ideal pick for the job. She is the daughter of two immigrant workers and union members. She understands first-hand the challenges working-class Americans face, and Rep. Solis has promised to strengthen labor unions. AFGE members are encouraged she will be in charge of setting the nation’s labor policies. That is a welcome reversal from the disastrous Bush years.”
AFGE also asked the Obama administration to keep unions involved in creating plans to revitalize the economy.
“Workers are the bedrock of the economy and whatever plans there are to improve the economy should include their input,” Gage said. “Once Solis is confirmed as Labor Secretary, AFGE looks forward to working closely with her to develop agency regulations that will revive our economy and improve the lives of working Americans.”
Senate confirmation hearings on Rep. Solis nomination are scheduled to start Friday, January 9.
