WASHINGTON – American Federation of Government Employees National President Everett Kelley today issued the following statement:
“House Speaker Kevin McCarthy’s decision to send lawmakers home as the government inches closer to a shutdown is a clear dereliction of duty.
“Tens of thousands of federal employees will be on duty this weekend taking care of veterans, patrolling our border, protecting air and rail travel, and serving our military troops overseas. They don’t get to leave work until the job is done, and neither should members of Congress.
“Without a federal budget in place before the end of the month, the vast majority of the 2.2 million federal employees who keep our government running will find themselves either locked out of their jobs or forced to go to work without a paycheck. Federal employees and every single American who depends on the government for vital programs and services deserve better from our elected leaders.
“I call on Congress to do its job and pass a budget to keep our government running and avoid the costly and catastrophic damage that will be done by a government shutdown.”
