It has been a long journey for the employees at the San Diego VA Healthcare System. This 40 person unit of medical technologists broke through the proverbial glass ceiling by gaining a collective voice in the workplace.
Last year, the registered nurses from the facility pushed the organizing process to a vote with the Federal Labor Relations Authority. Although the vote fell short of passing, their actions inspired the medical technologists to capitalize on the organizing momentum and complete the journey. “This unit will be the key for organizing at least 1,000 more San Diego VA Healthcare System employees,” said AFGE National Organizer Lance Stewart.
The RNs are re-energized and empowered by this victory. They look forward to replicating the feat this November.
