How to Support Veterans on Veterans Day and Beyond

Categories: VA, Veterans, The Insider

There are so many reasons we love veterans. They risk their lives for our country. Many return home with wounds both visible and invisible. Their families sacrifice too.

Many veterans come home not to retire but to serve again as civil servants.

That’s more than 31%.

About 1 in 3 federal employees are veterans. Here’s where they are:

Since 2009, the federal government has made it a priority to hire veterans. The number of veterans in the federal government has gone up from 25.8 % in 2009 prior to the issuance of President Obama’s Executive Order to hire more veterans.

Because 1 in 3 federal employees are veterans, veterans are one of the largest groups of federal employees affected by:

  • cuts to federal pay, healthcare, and retirement
  • hiring freezes
  • layoffs, staffing cuts
  • attacks on workplace protections, official time
  • cuts to agency budgets

When politicians make these cuts, they are hurting our heroes and their families. When they want to cut taxes for the wealthy and corporations, they’re taking money away from veterans and their families. Support veterans by opposing cuts to their pay, healthcare, retirement, and workplace protections.
