More lawmakers have signed on to co-sponsor a bill that would give federal employees a 3.3% pay raise in 2015. The Federal Adjustment of Income Rates (FAIR) Act, introduced by Rep. Gerry Connolly of Virginia in March, recognizes the spike in attrition rate among federal workers that has gone up by 35% since 2009.

Virgil Miller, former National Vice President of AFGE’s 8th District, passed away yesterday. Virgil was born on February 23, 1925; he was 89 years old. Virgil was elected National Vice President in 1969 after serving as President of Air Force Local 1997. Virgil retired from AFGE in May 1990. He was highly regarded and had won respect by everyone who had the privilege of knowing him.

April 8 is Equal Pay Day, the day that marks the day when women catch up to their male counterparts’ pay from the previous year. Even though the pay gap between men and women has decreased since 1963 when women earned only 59 cents to every dollar earned by men, prompting the passage of the Equal Pay Act, women’s pay continue to lag behind today. In the private sector, the pay gap is close to 20 cents and wider among African American and Latina women.

The Equal Pay Act was signed into law by President John F. Kennedy in 1963. Back then, women earned only 59 cents to every dollar earned by men. Although the gap has significantly decreased over the last 50 years, women continue to lag behind, still earning only 81 cents to every dollar a man earns.
