PSC Gift FAQs:
What is Happening?
Many FTEs have expressed an interest in getting a gift for PSCs, given that they did not receive backpay following the shutdown. The Union is providing a platform to do this.
How Can I Give?
Follow this Stripe link to donate. Donations are open starting now and will close at midnight on December 10th. Stripe accepts a variety of payment methods.
How Much Should I Give?
Any amount you can give helps. If all FTEs at MCC gave only $200, we could give $1,000 to 40 PSCs.
Can I share this? Can I give if I am not in the Union? Can alumni give?
Yes, please share the donation information widely. Everyone is welcome to donate, including MCC alumni, staff, supervisors, bargaining unit employees, contractors, etc.
What if not enough people donate or opt in?
The Union reserves the right to refund all donations if there are not enough donations or if not enough recipients opt in. The full, anonymized tally of donations and number of recipients will be presented to union membership at the December 12th Union meeting for approval.
How Can I Opt In?
If you are a current MCC PSC who did not receive pay during the government shutdown, you can opt in by filling out this short survey. Once you fill out the survey, you will be contacted on MCC email to confirm your identity. Your information will only be shared with Union leadership for the purpose of sending you a check and no one else. We will mail you a check at your home address on December 15th. The last day to opt in is December 8th.
How much will be given? Is there a maximum amount?
All PSCs that opt in will be given an equal share of the contributions (minus any Stripe fees). We do not know how much will be donated, so we don’t know how much you will get. For tax reasons, all distributions will be capped at $5,000. If an equal division of the pot would lead to recipients receiving more than $5,000, donors will be refunded the remaining funds on a “last in first out” basis.
Are there ethics or tax issues that I should be worried about?
While there are restrictions on contractors giving money to employees there are not the same restrictions on employees giving to contractors. Additionally, the Union is an independent 501(c)(5) organization with the ability to accept donations and provide gifts separate from ethics concerns of FTEs. This is a gift, not a grant, and so not considered taxable income. That said, we are not lawyers or accountants, and this does not represent legal or tax advice. If you have concerns we encourage you to consult the federal ethics regulations. If you believe that there would be a conflict of interest by accepting the gift, do not opt in.
